The Department of Landscape Architecture of Tunghai University has been organizing overseas study trips for 8 years since 2011. This program encourages students to go abroad not only for professional studies but also to learn about the lifestyle of a different culture. It helps students cultivate international outlook and experience local practices of landscape architecture.
In the summer study trip of 2018, students went to overseas bases of the program including Seattle and Portland in the U.S., and Vancouver in Canada. Participating students interacted with the local departments of landscape architecture and professional landscape architecture companies. Through this trip, students acquired knowledge about Seattle Green Factor (SGF), Low Impact Development (LID), and solutions in urban afforestation, repurposing of unused public spaces, public art installation, city marketing, urban farming, and community building. At the end of the tour, students presented their learning outcome incorporating the new knowledge and experience they had gained during the overseas field trips.
Walking through the city center, participants learned about the city
park system and the design of public spaces in Seattle on August 21.
The group was led by Tseng You-Rong, Lecturer of Landscape Architecture at THU, with 17 members in total. They departed on 20 August 2018 for a 21-day intensive study trip abroad. At the University of Washington, the group was hosted by Jeff Hou and Ken Yocom, Department Chair and Professors of Landscape Architecture, and Manish Chalana, Professor of Urban Design & Planning. Local THU alumni Chen Zhi-Ping, Chen Ying-Ting, and Cheng Ying-Run were invited to give talks on local case studies.
One of the destinations during the trip was Portland, the most livable city in the U.S. Students learned about the city’s urban planning and nature-based design in depth. The trip also took students to Vancouver, a low-carb city in Canada, to see the development of the most beautiful harbor area, the 2010 Olympic Village, and Stanley Park, in which places students learned about the key elements of urban planning. During the intensive study trip, students visited more than a hundred spots for landscape architecture with professional tour guides and educational activities. The local life experience gained from this program could improve students’ professional skills in landscape architecture and expand their global perspective.
The group visited the Low Impact Development community to learn about the eco-friendly
lifestyle and solutions of water conservation by collecting waste water and reusing it for ecological purposes.
