During May 28 to June 2, 2017, Chairman Ming-Li Hsieh of the Department of Life Science, Chairman F.D. Lung of the Department of Chemistry, Chairman Ching-Tsorng Tsai of the Department of Computer Science, and Professor Wen-Haw Chen of the Department of Applied Mathematics led a group of assistants and graduate students, together with staff of the Office of International Education and Programs, to organize a science camp in Foon Yew High School, Johor Bahru, Malaysia.
According to Principal Tee Bee Tin of Foon Yew High School, the FYHS Science Camp has been held for three consecutive years. This year, with the Tunghai University team on the program, the participants number has way out-run the average of 180 students. The three-day science camp with intensive experiment sessions has highly inspired the high schoolers.

During the program, the Tunghai professors designed 7 chemistry-related experiments, such as aluminum recycling, the extraction of caffeine from tea leaves, and the beautiful chemical sea garden; 2 life-science-related experiments, such as the simulation of wetland ecology and Gram Staining; as well as water purification (environmental engineering), wireless charging (electrical engineering), Arduino auto-driven car (computer science) and other experiments of different academic levels. Students were able to understand the basic theories of chemical reactions and logistics of programming through the intriguing experiments. The program was designed to raise the students’ interests towards science and engineering.

Additionally, Professor Wen-Haw Chen of the Department of Applied Mathematics delivered two speeches: “Math Under Civilization, Logic, and Aesthetic Perspectives” towards a group of teachers, and “Into the World of Math” towards the students. By leading the audience to view math from the perspectives of arts and life, the two speeches received great feedbacks.

The Science Camp was Tunghai’s first educational mission in a Malaysian high school. The Tunghai team received high praise from the teachers and students in Foon Yew High School. In the closing ceremony, besides thanking Tunghai University for bringing new perspectives and learning experiences to the school, Vice Principal Tan Teck Sen expressed his intention to collaborate with Tunghai on a long-term basis, hoping to influence and benefit more Foon Yew students.

Tunghai’s Chairpersons Prof. Hsieh and Prof. Lung also mentioned that through the program, Tunghai University had established better understandings of the Foon Yew students’ educational needs. They believed future collaboration would be greatly beneficial to the students while demonstrating Tunghai’s effort and strength in education and in cultivating students to become knowledge-seekers and goal-achievers.
