The “2017 International Students Spring Gala” was held on February 19, 2017, with close to 500 attendees. The theme of this event was “Home is Where the Heart is.” For the overseas students, Tunghai serves as their homes abroad, one that cares and loves them all.
Tunghai President Mao-Jiun Wang personally hosted the event and wished everyone a happy new year. Deputy Education Counselor Kuo-Chen Chen of the Ministry of Education, Secretary-General Liang-Ming Chang of the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC), Director Shih-Chieh Hua of the Mainland Affairs Council, and other representatives of official departments and organizations attended the event to show their care towards Tunghai’s overseas students.
According to Deputy Education Counselor Chen, the international students from all over the world were able to gather and demonstrate surprising cultural diversity in Taiwan thanks to the efforts of various stakeholders. The Ministry of Education would provide full support to help each university take care of overseas students. Chen also encouraged the students to stay in Taiwan for further educational and career purposes.
Secretary-General Chang mentioned that there were already over a hundred thousand international students graduated from Taiwan and performing outstandingly in their hometowns. Chang also announced that the OCAC would make policy adjustments to encourage overseas students to pursue a career in Taiwan. The announcement won a supportive round of applause from the attending oversea students. Additionally, the OCAC sponsored the event’s lottery prizes with bicycles, iPads, portable chargers, and other useful products, bringing the event to its climax.
The performances carried out respectively by students from Malaysia, Indonesia, the United States, Hong Kong and Macau, and China filled the evening with joyful excitements. Be it traditional dance, contemporary hip-hop, exotic music, or even magic show, the performances made up a series of surprises.
Dean Hong-Wei Yen of the Office of International Education and Programs presented the organizers with certificates of appreciation. Chief Organizer Wai-Nam Yiu from Hong Kong said, “In the past two years, I simply sat down there eating and chatting. This time, taking the position of chief organizer, I finally understand the effort and sacrifices made by the event planners. From planning, rehearsing, to the performance on the day, we went through four months of work. I am really happy to create this opportunity for all international students to gather together. I am more than grateful and proud of all of us!” With the spirits of seeking for truth, faith, and deeds, the Tunghai attitude will be passed on from one generation to another.
