Tunghai University (THU) and the Taichung Veterans General Hospital (TVGH) signed an Industry-Academia Cooperation agreement on May 17, 2018. THU President Wang Mao-Jiun and TVGH Director Hsu Hei-Heng signed the agreement as the representatives of the respective parties and stated that, in addition to continuing the cooperative relationship, they expected educational and research breakthroughs thanks to the positive cooperation between Tunghai professors and TVGH medical staff.
 

President Wang Mao-Jiun said that institutional similarities provide Tunghai University and the Taichung Veterans General Hospital with a good foundation for collaboration. Tunghai University is a comprehensive university with interdisciplinary programs and curricula. The Taichung Veterans General Hospital is the leading hospital in Central Taiwan and provides Tunghai University access to professional knowledge in the medical sciences. With interdisciplinary cooperation, both sides expect the improvement of education to create a better society.

So far, many departments in Tunghai have cooperated with TVGH to develop a wide range of professional skills and courses. For example, the Life Science Department has collaborated with the TVGH Biological Technology Patent section, the Social Work Department with the Social Worker Cultivation Internship, the Chemical and Material Engineering Department with the TVGH Artificial Joints Program, the Food Science Department with the Health Ingredient Development section, the Information Engineering Department with the Information Engineering Video team, and the Environmental Science and Engineering Department with the Environmental Quality Monitoring Team. With the new agreement, both sides hope to develop further cooperation between TCGH’s Biomedical Division and the Life Science Department and between the Health Care Management section and the Industrial Engineering Department.

The Director of Taichung Veterans General Hospital, Hsu Hei-Heng, stated that TVGH has long had a positive relationship with Tunghai University. With the new agreement, he hopes that TVGH doctors will have more opportunities to participate in the master or doctoral programs at Tunghai, as well as the interdisciplinary courses, to foster their research and professional development. Lifelong learning and educational training are essential to the cultivation of medical talents. Nurses, pharmacists, and medical examiners are all expected to participate in the programs. In addition to the academic cooperation, he is also looking forward to further cooperation between industry and university. Tunghai University and Taichung Veterans General Hospital, finally, will also cooperate in the areas of Long-term Care Systems and Elderly Care Systems.
