Good morning, Global Village! To support the “Clean Up the World Weekend (CUW Weekend)*,” Tunghai University started a series of events while kicking off the 2016 Tunghai Flamegold Environmental Month on September 22nd. The opening day activities included campus cleaning and a flash-mop music festival performed by the Tunghai Jazz Music Club. In the following month, there will be environmental second-hand flea markets, entertaining creativity competitions, speeches and forums on topics related to green energy, and film appreciation. This event was supported by many international students and professors as well as local students and various university communities.

According to Tunghai President Mao-Juin Wang, the organization of CUW Weekend and the Environmental Month provides the students with an opportunity to connect to a world campaign through which an overall awareness of environmental protection and the value of devotion would be raised and experienced. Tunghai University is the first educational institution to practice student labor program. It has long been following valuable traditions as well as holding service workshops and establishing community connections. These are all parts of Tunghai’s contribution to social and environmental sustainability.

What is unique about this year’s Flamegold Festival is that, besides the green flea market organized by the Tunghai Women’s Association, the Alumni Association also collaborates with the Department of Industrial Design to launch a “Soap Car Creativity Competition,” encouraging participants to showcase their innovative ideas through recycling and reusing waste materials. The competition is designed to promote Tunghai’s development and educational vision in sustainability and green innovation. The activities in the Flamegold Environmental Month include: Flamegold Book Fair, Film Appreciation on “Reading Formosa, Taiwan from Above,” a series of speeches about biodiversity, and musical events by students’ clubs.
