Former Tunghai President KoWang Mei passed away in his residence on Tunghai campus on April 1st, at the age of 100. To honor him, a “Doctor KoWang Mei Memorial Service” was held at the Luce Chapel on April 9th. President Ma personally attended the service and granted a national commendation, which was accepted by Mei’s wife, SuLin Lu.
Besides President Ma and the mayor of Taichung, many prominent representatives from the political, academic, and educational fields also attended the ceremony to honor the great educator. Tunghai Chairman and Pastor ChiHung Tsung led a prayer for the family, represented by the son Mr. FuHsing Mei. Current THU President MaoJiun Wang cited Palms 90 from the Bible. Pastor YiJiun Lee, ChunWang Lee, and ChiShang Tang coled the worship, prayer, and testimony. The Luce Chapel Poem Team and Prof. YiLin Hsu delivered a poem, while Prof. Juanelva Rose performed music. With love and appreciation, we said farewell to Dr. Mei. The ceremony was broadcasted live globally through the Tunghai website.
Professor Mei was the fourth president of Tunghai during 1978 to 1992. Current president MaoJiun Wang counted his most significant contributions to THU during the fourteen years of presidency in four aspects:
1. Guided Tunghai to become a larger university
2. Augmented najor facilities such as the new library and the Alumni Center, and recruited outstanding teaching faculties
3. Connected the university with the society by establishing the extended education program and collaboration with industry
4. Established the first dedicated international education office in Taiwan in 1986, setting a solid foundation for globalization for THU

He was formerly the president of Tunghai University and Central Police School, the SecretaryGeneral of Youth Development Administration of the Ministry of Education and Center for AsiaPacific Area Studies, the DirectorGeneral of the Ministry of National Defense, and a professor in National Taiwan University, National Taiwan Normal University, National Chung Hsing University, Chinese Culture University, and more. Moreover, he established the National Water Rescue Association as the first president and the Family Wellness Association as the founding director. After retiring from THU, he founded Taiwan Development Institute and had been the founder and chairman for twenty-four years until now.
