The celebration of Tunghai University 60th anniversary has started early this year, and the celebration reached its climax on November 1 and 2 in 2 days. Taichung city mayor Mr. Chia-Lung Lin was invited to the opening ceremony as a special guest and praised the vitality and creativity of students as well as the great success in higher education at Tunghai University. Over 5,000 students and representatives from different fields joined the celebration, including partner institutions and alumni from around the world.
On the sports day, athletes entered the sports field with creatively designed customs. The most impressive ones were students from department of law using black plastic bags to make lawyer gowns and students from the department of fine art wearing the masks of No-Face figure from an animation movie. Performances then followed, 1,300 university freshmen presented the celebration parade; students from THU Affiliated Experimental High School presented the ‘energy60’ dance; students from the Elementary School wearing colorful clothes to presenting cheer leader dances; and finally children from THU Kindergarten ended the performance with adorable and delightful and adorable dances.
President Proxy Dr. Cheng-Tung Lin encouraged all students to maintain good health through sports while tending to their daily academic studies.
“Happy Birthday to Tunghai University” greeted Taichung city mayor Lin. Mayor Lin indicated that Taichung city government is one of the founders giving birth to Tunghai University as it donated 133 hectares of land to establish the university 60 years ago. He was happy to see that Tunghai University has flourished into an internationally renowned higher education institution which fostered numerous outstanding alumni who made tremendous contributions to the society.
Mayor Lin also thanked Tunghai University for the efforts in making Taichung a greener city with its traditional practice of requiring each freshman to plant a tree on campus during the orientation week every year. By doing so, the 133ha campus of Tunghai maintains its indispensable role as the ‘green lung’ of Taichung City. Mr. Lin further pointed out that Taichung city government will be hosting “2018 Taichung World Flora Exposition” and “2019 East Asian Youth Games.” He expected to have intimate collaborations with Tunghai University to build Taichung into a green culture city.
At noon, a celebration party with music and buffet was organized with performances by musical and dancing clubs. It started with a street dance followed by happy birthday melody played by Chinese and western instruments. A plaque of appreciation was granted to Dr. Juanelva Rose, the founder of Department of Music of Tunghai University, for her 50 years of serve at the University. The school faculty, staff, students and alumni together enjoyed the cheerful and relaxed party time.
