  [March 13, 2018] The Tunghai University and Amazon Web Services (AWS) today held a signing ceremony for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish the first Cloud Innovation School in Taiwan. On the same day, Tunghai University and Industrial Parks in central Taiwan, including Central Taiwan Science Park, Taichung Industrial Park, Taichung City Precision Machinery Innovation Technology Park, Dali Industrial Park, and Feng Chou High-Tech Industrial Park, jointly announced the launch of the Industrial Innovation Alliance, which will help align industries in central Taiwan with top-tier global resources, to facilitate future industrial innovation.

The new Tunghai University Cloud Innovation School incorporates five departments from the College of Engineering and the College of Management, including Computer Science, Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Business Administration, and Information Management. The School will focus on two aspects: cloud technology and the digital economy. AWS Cloud will be the platform on which future talent learns high-demand skills such as artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of things (IoT), big data, and cloud computing services. The digital economy program will focus on building on successful and innovative business models using AWS Cloud, offering specialized courses on the impact of technology on industries, and providing innovative models for their operation.

Over two hundred faculty members and students participated in the event to get to learn more about AWS Cloud.

“Tunghai University is the first university in Taiwan to sign a MoU with AWS to establish a Cloud Innovation School,” said President Mao-Jiun Wang of Tunghai University. “The collaboration recognizes the efforts by Tunghai faculty members and students. As an innovative university with a long tradition in the liberal arts, Tunghai University is renowned for developing talent in higher education. In addition to the Cloud Innovation School, the university has also established a tertiary-level Cloud Innovation Center to introduce the latest international cloud innovations and technology, and to train faculty members and students to be proactive in the ever-changing, global digital age. With the Industrial Innovation Alliance, the university will partner with industries in central Taiwan in the areas of industry-academia collaboration, talent development, and incubation innovation. By providing industries in central Taiwan with top-tier global innovation resources, participating in this industrial paradigm shift, and opening up new opportunities. Tunghai University aims to serve as the home base in central Taiwan for introducing and adopting global technology and digital economy models. Together, we will leverage the knowledge base of local industries, to solve practical problems and develop new operational thinking.”

On the day of the two ceremonies, a seminar took place featuring keynote speaker, Ken Eisner, Global Lead of AWS Educate Program. Eisner serves as a Council Member with the District of Columbia (D.C.) Innovation and Technology Inclusion Council, advising the Mayor of Washington, D.C. on issues surrounding innovation and technology inclusion in education and industry. Commerce Development Research Institute (CDRI) discussed the current status of industries in Taiwan, and the opportunities and challenges presented by new digital economic technology in promoting the upgrading of Taiwanese traditional industries. The two speaking sessions were followed by a panel discussion on challenges and innovation in the cloud era. Meanwhile, AWS hosted the AWS University AWSome Day, featuring presentations by Professor Maid F. Sakr from Carnegie Mellon University, and Michael Chen, Technical Program Manager of AWS Academy Program.
