The English Language Center at Tunghai University has successfully hosted its first-ever Master Chef competition. The event, held on May 5th, 2023, brought together 15 talented and creative students from different majors and countries. They gathered in LAN105 to showcase their most treasured cuisines.

The competition was organized by Mr. Jiedson Domigpe and Ms. Cecilia Liu, who aimed to promote cultural exchange and celebrate diversity through the sharing of culinary traditions. The event was judged by two esteemed faculty members from the ELC, Ms. Sylvia Hsu and Dr. Miao-chin Chiu. The judging criteria included presentation skills, taste, creativity, and plating, with presentation skills carrying the most weight at 50 percent.
The dishes prepared by the students were nothing short of spectacular. Students from Indonesia wowed the judges with dishes such as babi dabu-dabu, steak from the Earth, and rawon. Students from Japan prepared sata andagi, while those from Kyrgyzstan prepared plov. Taiwanese local students also showcased their rich and dynamic cuisine, including milkfish porridge, sesame oil chicken with thin noodle soup, chicken soup with pickled chili peppers, and fried rice noodles. Delectable desserts like vanilla cheesecake, Basque cheesecake, pineapple cake, and wedang ronde were also featured.
Tasting
During the presentation, students showcased their dishes, explaining their cultural and personal significance while providing detailed instructions on preparation. The event recognized outstanding presentations in various categories, including best in presentation, taste, plating, and the fan choice award. Fredella Lisjanto and Victoria Karina wowed the judges and audience with their flawless presentation of wedang ronde, a dessert with a heartfelt story of overcoming homesickness as international students in Taiwan. Darren Lie's Indonesian rice bowl, rawon, claimed the best taste prize, showcasing his dedication to sourcing authentic ingredients from his hometown. Susan Santiago impressed everyone with her creatively plated steak from the Earth. Finally, Felicia Beatrice Senjaya and Gabriella Yuwono secured the fan vote award with their mouthwatering babi dabu-dabu dish.

The event was a wonderful celebration of diverse cultures and traditions, offering students a special chance to unite and showcase their love for food.
