The Nakayoshi Club, a well-known EISA traditional dance club of Okinawa International University in Japan visited Tunghai University in October for a series of cultural exchange activities. The event kicked off on October 19, 2017 with a dance and traditional music parade along the Tunghai Mall.
Along with the strong and lively beats of drums and traditional melody, the club performed their traditional EISA dance. It was the sixth time the fifty club members came to Taiwan to perform. The event strengthened the bonds between Taiwan and Japan and broadened students’ perspectives.

EISA is originally a religious dance performed by Okinawan people in July. In order to promote the dance, the club re-choreographed the dance into a more interactive parade. The dance uses Taiko as the main instrument as well as Shamisen, a three-stringed traditional Japanese musical instrument. The parade was enjoyed by students from Japan and Tunghai alike.
The coordinator of this event, Tunghai student Aya Hsu, notes that she participated in a student EISA performance four years ago and was left with unforgettable impressions. The fact that the EISA club took the initiative to raise funds for the visit to Taiwan made the event altogether very significant. Although they encountered several difficulties during the preparation and planning of the event, they were still able to overcome the problems and carry out their visit to Tunghai. She also gave her thanks to the Japanese volunteers, teachers, and students who supported the event.
President Yuusei Tamaki of the EISA Club pointed out that, though the Club was mainly based at Okinawa International University, it also benefited from the support of students from other universities, as well as the citizens of Okinawa. As this year marked the 16th year since the founding of the Club, they actively joined festivals and events all across Okinawa and even performed in Hawaii and Macau. Every opportunity to perform was taken seriously by all members.
In addition to local festivals in Okinawa, the club also actively reached out internationally. They had their first overseas performance in Hawaii in 2002, and since 2004, they have come to Tunghai University five times.
