Ever since its establishment, Tunghai University has been keenly devoted into promoting international education. During March 16 to 19, 2017, President Mao-Jiun Wang led Dean Hong-Wei Yen of the Office of International Education and Programs, Director Chyuan Perng of the Placement and Alumni Office, and Associate Dean Ying-Chyi Cho of the Office of Academic Affairs to embark on an exchange trip in Malaysia.
Sunway University Visit
The first stop is Tunghai’s sister university, Sunway University. Tunghai has been cooperating with Sunway University for three years. Sunway University was funded by the Sunway Group in 1987. The Tunghai delegation was warmly received by its President, Vice President, three Deans, a Distinguished Professor, and two assistants. After discussion, the two universities reached a consensus to start off with departments related to creative design and fine arts. Professors as well as students of the two schools would be encouraged to participate in exchange programs starting this September.
Tsun Jin High School Visit
On the next day, the Tunghai delegation arrived at Tsun Jin High school in Kuala Lumpur. Students from this high school take up the largest portion of Malaysian-Chinese studying at Tunghai. Principal Cheng Ah Swee welcomed the delegation and arranged an information meeting with the graduating class. Students were highly interested in studying at Tunghai, proposing questions regarding their interested majors, scholarship programs, and living expenses. After the meeting, Tunghai agreed to grant a number of degree-seeking admission opportunities for students recommended by the high school.
United Chinese School Committee’s Association of Malaysia
The United Chinese School Committee’s Association of Malaysia (also known as Dong Zong) was represented by its CEO Hong Waon Ying, two Directors, as well as two executives in the luncheon. Dong Zong and Jiao Zong are the alliances of the boards and teachers’ associations of national Chinese elementary schools and middle schools in Malaysia. Tunghai hopes to deliver its admission information to all schools through this channel. Later, Tunghai’s visiting group visited partner institution New Era College. The college was established by Dong Zong and has recently transformed to become a general university approved by the Ministry of Education of Malaysia. Tunghai has already been working closely to the university and is hoping to explore more about the possibilities of starting a master dual-degree program.
Tunku Abdul Rahman University (UTAR)
On March 18th, the Tunghai delegation headed to another sister university, Tunku Abdul Rahman University, to attend its graduation ceremony. Professor Yu-Hsuan Chung of Tunghai’s Department of Accounting is currently on a faculty exchange program at UTAR. The two universities discussed about an MBA joint enrollment program, which would admit 10 students respectively to each school. The 20 students would then participate in a bilateral teaching and local internship program. The campus of the university is large and flourished with lively ecosystems. A sculpture of Confucius and Einstein playing chess together at the middle of the campus catches people’s attention, expressing the exchange between the West and the East.
Star City Daily Interview
The Tunghai representatives accepted an interview by the Malaysia Star City Daily. The topic of the interview circles around recent development and characteristics of Tunghai University, including its international programs, scholarships for international students and especially for Malaysian students, as well as its dual-degree programs, career consultancy, and international industry internship programs. The interview was widely reported by the local media.
The visiting trip was also welcomed warmly by Tunghai’s Malaysian alumni, showing the strong bond between the university and its alumni.
