Introduction
The College of Agriculture was founded in 1982 and renamed the College of Agriculture and Health in August 1st 2022. We have the Department of Animal Science and Biotechnology, the Department of Food Science, the Department of Hospitality Management, and the bachelor’s degree program in Senior Wellness and Sports Science. All three departments offer master’s degree programs and the Animal Science and Biotechnology Department offers doctoral degree program.
In 2022, there are more than 1288 undergraduates, 114 M.S., and 13 Ph.D. students enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Health. Furthermore, we have recruited more than 50 scholars with doctoral degrees as faculty members.
The College of Agriculture and Health provides credit program for Biotechnology. The College also has the Agricultural Extension Center and Farming areas on campus for students to work as interns. Each Department within the College has its core facilities including a dairy farm for the Department of Animal Science and Biotechnology, a food processing pilot plant and food analysis laboratory for the Department of Food Science, as well as a culinary classroom for the Department of Hospitality Management. The College is one of the reputable applied science providers in Taiwan. Our vision is to solve problems and to build fundamental knowledge for advanced studies in agriculture, food systems, hospitality management and senior wellness. We have cooperators in academic and industrial institutions both in Taiwan and from other countries, which provides not only valuable internship and job opportunities in such a competitive working environment but also provides connections between investors around the world.
The Department of Animal Science and Biotechnology was founded in 1975, beginning to offer master’s degree program in 1989 (Animal Husbandry and Animal Production; Animal Product Processing) and the doctoral program in 1990. The goal of the department is to educate and train students with the knowledge of intelligent animal science and biotechnology. Our curriculum is designed to emphasize both in theory and in practice. The major research in the department focuses on animal husbandry (nutrition; care and breeding of livestock), animal product processing (milk production; livestock processing; dairy and feedlot management) and biotechnology.
The Department of Food Science focuses on food technologies and safety while supporting students to become food industry administrators. We provide expertise in food processing, biochemistry, food chemistry, food analysis, microbiology, biotechnology, innovative product development, industrial economy, and supply chain. The department was established in 1980 and added its master’s degree program in 1990, subdivided into Food Technology and Food Industry & Business Administration sectors. Food Science in Tunghai preserves core strength in science and technology while incorporating the essence of precision health and supply chain management. The solid education enables undergraduate and graduate students to hold important positions in this fast-changing and ever-growing field.
The Department of Hospitality Management was established in 2000, and offers bachelor’s degree and master’s degree programs. Since 2013, the Department has been offering master’s degree program for mid-career professionals. To meet society’s demand for well-trained hospitality professionals, our program is designed to provide expertise in hotel business, food health, sanitation standards, hospitality marketing and leisure with strong background knowledge. The department has been cooperating with leading international universities to provide the most up-to-date training and skills needed to raise the standard of hospitality industry in Taiwan.
Bachelor’s degree program in Senior Wellness and Sports Science was originally established as the Division of Continuing Education in Sports Recreation and Health Management Degree Program in 2014, which focused mainly on sports and physical training. Today, the goal of the program in Senior Wellness and Sports Science is to develop sports preventive medicine for older adults. The program brings together professors and clinical experts in gerontology, exercise science, and the artificial intelligence of thing (AIoT) not only to provide students with solid foundation of knowledge in different fields, but also to bridge the gap between senior industry and sports industry. Therefore, students are well prepared and qualified for a variety of jobs in such industry after graduation.
