Introduction
The college of Science was one of the original two colleges which formed Tunghai University when it was founded in 1955. At present the College consists of the four departments of Physics, Chemistry, Life Science, and Mathematics. All have Master's degree programs, and each has its areas of expertise. The Life Science Department and Chemistry Department also has a Ph.D. program. Physics Department will has a Ph.D. program in 2010.
This college presently has about 191 graduate students and 1395 undergraduates. The student body is served by 68 full-time faculty, of whom 98% have Ph.D. degrees. The faculty are not only committed to academic excellence in their own field, but also to teaching students in and out of class. This fosters close teacher-student relationships which thereby strengthens the quality of education.
Education and research are linked with experimentation and practice. The planned Basic Science Building and Labtory Building is now completed. Its appearance conforms the style of the campus, and their equipment meets the needs of modern education, improving the adequacy of the College's space facilities. Although the College considers the study of basic scientific theory as its first priority, it also emphasizes application and cooperation with industry and government. Cooperating agencies include the National Science Council, Taichung Veterans' General Hospital, Yushan National Park.
The College currently has 26 teaching assistants, many of whom have Master's degrees. They assist the educational process with both instruction and academic mentoring, teaching lab courses and homework discussion.
Each of the 68 teachers has his or her own specialty, carrying on research in the lab or office. In addition to providing for graduate students' research, faculty often attend conferences and present research results.
This College emphasizes an atmosphere of academic research. In addition to the above listed cooperative research projects, each department publishes a department journal for students. Faculty not only publish in professional journals in Taiwan and elsewhere, they also contribute articles to each issue of the Tunghai Science.
Ever since the founding of the college of Science in 1955, each Dean has cared for the quality of our faculty and labored to establish and improve an environment which encourages faculty development. In this way, the college can provide a higher standard of scientific research as well as more and better-qualified research personnel for the nation and the society.
