An annual Chinese speaking competition among international students is held at National Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, with an aim to motivate foreign language learners to understand more about traditional Taiwanese culture and enhance their interest in learning Chinese as well. A team of well-trained contestants under the supervision of one CLC mentor, Ms. Hui-Chuan Chu, participated in the significant event this November.

The CLC started the competition preparation by recruiting potential contestants who are proficient Chinese learners and willing to challenge themselves by receiving special, if not tough, trainings during the summer. Four representatives were finally selected and engaged in a series of training sessions offered by Ms. Chu over the past two months. The representative were Kirin Hirano and Moeka Toratani from Japan as well as Benton James Gordon and Kyle James Armstrong from the U.S.A.

The four contestants were encouraged to partake in respective training workshops (1 to 2 hrs per week) during this Fall semester. It really came a long way, starting from getting to know each other and picking out the most relatable topic, followed by how to express their perspectives on the topic and how they would like to interpret their personal feelings toward the relevant issues. Step by step, they put abstract thoughts and feelings into words after editing and revising their several drafts, not to mention the countless times they practiced on presenting the content orally to meet the mentor’s high expectation. Most importantly, these foreign students were supposed to memorize the Chinese speech script, along with practicing how to express emotion through postures and conquering possible stage fright. Throughout the training sessions, Ms. Chu diligently instructed these mentees to reach demanding goals by means of pushing themselves to the limit. As a saying goes, “hard work will pay off in the long run.” Their outstanding performances in this annual island-wide contest finally confirm their endeavor and devotion.

“Hold the vision, trust the process” is the belief these foreign students espoused during their pre-match preparation. Their involvement in this competition nourished themselves with the language competence to achieve their expectations. There is no doubt that they have a promising future on the journey toward Chinese language proficiency ahead of them.
