To enhance students' interest and motivation in English learning, a group of experienced teachers in the English Center of Tunghai University have designed a fully modularized sophomore English course which will be put into practice in the fall semester of 2020. There will be four modules including Multiculturalism, Self-Expression Skills, Career and Profession, and Daily Communication. A total of 68 classes will be open for over 1,700 sophomore students.

Through cross-department faculty discussions and surveys, six experimental classes of communication and expression were set up in 2018. In 2019, they were expanded to experimental modular courses covering four major themes, for a total of 31 classes. According to the results of two-year prudent evaluation, the experimental modular courses were highly recognized by both teachers and students. Therefore, it was decided that the sophomore English course to be fully modularized in the academic year 2020. The class design is planned to be modified on a rolling basis according to actual classroom experiences.
Teachers discuss on modular teachings and getting familiar with teaching softwares
There are three major differences between the module courses and the original compulsory sophomore English courses: (1) Topics are more interesting: students can take the module courses according to their own interests. (2) More choices: Students must choose two different modules in the first and the second semesters. Through different training priorities, students improve their English competencies at different aspects. (3) Diversified assessment methods: The traditional mid-term and final exams will be cancelled, and the instructor will assess learning results based on the core goals of the module.
Experiencing online English teaching
In order to ensure the quality and effectiveness of the modular courses, the professional teaching team at the English Center has conducted questionnaire surveys to understand the challenges and problems experienced by teachers, and organized multiple teaching workshops according to the needs of teachers. Topics include module curriculum design brainstorming, teaching method demonstrations, classroom activity operations, multiple learning assessments, student work exchanges, and practical online teaching skills. Group discussions, brainstorming, and sharing of ideas have notably enhanced the course.Tunghai Sophomore students! Welcome to a brand-new journey of English learning!
