The Chinese Language Center(CLC) of Tunghai University holds The “Photo, Writing, and Speaking Contest” was held by every spring semester. This is the 8th year and it was held on April 29th at the Language Building. Due to the COVID-19 situation, this year’s contest only allowed the participants, judges, and staff members to be at the competition area and safe social distance measures were observed ; all other students who were interested in watching the competition were asked to watch in their own classrooms in order to prevent cluster infection. The whole contest was live-broadcasted on Facebook, and the broadcast was set up at every CLC classroom for students to watch and to cheer for their classmates or friends with real-time responses on Facebook!
Chief International Officer of the Office of International Relations, Dr. Annie Y. Tsai, giving an opening speech to encourage the participants
The Chief International Officer of the Office of International Relations, Dr. Annie Y. Tsai, also personally attended the competition to encourage the 26 participants. In her speech, she mentioned that the learning of a language will affect how a person thinks and processes messages. According to many research, brains of bilingual speakers start up in a different way when processing messages, which make them view the world with a different perspective and a multi-cultural aspect. This will also help them to be more flexible when facing different situations. She also gave recognition to all teachers of the CLC for working hard in teaching and nurturing the students, and hoped that the students would show the fruits of their labor in the contest.

The photo and report given by the students were all amazing! Every photo taken is from the heart of the student’s during their visit of Taiwan; every word written is their reflection on all things they saw and heard in daily life or while travelling. The content of their work included Taiwan’s beauty in human relation, cultural customs, historic building, foods, and views; “COVID-19”also became one of the content this year in students’ work, which is the real reflection of their current lives. All works presented are very wonderful and valuable!
Other than the contest, Dr. Tsai also came to the Center with CLC Director, Dr. Mei-Hui Liu, to visit the students and teachers. She gave thanks to the teachers who put their full effort in teaching the students, cared for the students’ learning condition, and encouraged everyone to continue improving their language skills and cherish their stay at Tunghai University.
