The early campus of Tunghai University was designated a ‘cultural landscape’ by the Cultural Heritage Committee of Taichung City on January 21, 2021. This is the first case in Taiwan for a university campus to be chosen.
Tunghai University was founded in 1955 with support from the United Board for Christian Higher Education. Renowned American Chinese architect I.M. Pei, Mr. C.K. Chen and Mr. Chao-Kang Chang were invited to design the campus. The designers followed the rules of Chinese gardens, taking nature and aesthetics into consideration while combining tradition and modern creativity, to create the early campus landscape. The early campus of Tunghai University is the most remarkable architectural work in Taiwan after the Second World War. The building style is modern with direct combination of Chinese gardens and quadrangle house layouts, presenting a unique ‘Modern Streamlined Chinese Style’. It has since been regarded as the representative architectural work of modernism in the 1960’s.
According to the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act, cultural landscapes refer to visible landscapes or facilities formed through prolonged cultivation of natural resources, with historical, religious, industrial, military associations. Internationally, a cultural landscape is “a cultural property that represents the combined works of nature and of man" as defined by the World Heritage Committee.
With remarkable buildings such as Luce Chapel, Priest Bell Tower, Wesley House, and Art Center, the early campus of Tunghai University has been recommended as a cultural heritage to the Taichung City Government by local organizations for years. The city government, through expert committee reviews, finally decided to register the campus as a cultural landscape of Taichung based on its perfect match with the original natural landscape and climate conditions. The early campus of Tunghai University is the first university campus to be recognized as a cultural landscape in Taiwan and the 7th cultural landscape in Taichung City.
